Regulation and Responsibility Mark AHAM Annual Meeting
The Difficult Road to Standardization
As manufacturers keep rolling out the so-called smart appliances, which are appliances with embedded communications capability, AHAM continues its quest of standardizing them by developing specifications that enable interoperability, hoping to eventually introduce a voluntary certification program. During the Smart Appliance Forum, AHAM brought its members up to date with its initiatives.
AHAM began its efforts eight months ago, forming the Smart Appliance Task Force. Among the 20 participating companies are Amana Appliances, Electrolux, Samsung, LG Electronics, GE Appliances, Echelon, Maytag, Whirlpool, Sharp, Sub-Zero and more; products span many categories and include refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges, etc.
