Report: Blu-ray, HD DVD Player Prices Likely to Drop
Despite predictions to the contrary, the 2007 holiday shopping season ended without a clear victor in the hi-def disc format war. But with prices continuing to drop for hardware on both ends of the battle, a winner may finally be crowned in 2008.
According to a report from Understanding & Solutions, as cited by Reuters, prices of both HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc players will likely drop significantly in price, as “economies of scale” work their magic and bring down the cost of materials for the products. The report also predicted that players in both formats will likely drop below $100 in 2011, if both are in fact still in existence then.
Understanding & Solutions did not predict a winner in the format war, but did state that Blu-ray controlled 70 percent of the software market the week Transformers, one of the most popular HD DVD-exclusive titles of the year, was released.
