Are Best Buy employees at one New Jersey store lying to customers by telling several of them that they are buying the “last” Nintendo Wii in stock? That’s the case, according to the blog Consumerist.com, which reported Wednesday that the above scenario unfolded at a Best Buy location in Princeton, N.J.
According to the site’s correspondent, an employee at the store emerged from a back door, holding a Wii console over his head, and informed customers that it was the last one in stock. But then, about 30 minutes after the unit sold, the process repeated itself over again, with another “last Wii” emerging. After it happened a third time, the correspondent overheard managers discussing the ruse, with one telling another to “wait 40 minutes and send out the next one.”
There were no reports that Best Buy was marking up the price of the consoles, so the alleged artificial shortage would likely not violate any laws.
