Retail Excellence- Bernie's
Now in it's third life, Bernie's had a tough market to recapture. "From '85 to '90 there was a huge [CE retail] invasion in Connecticut," says Rosenberg. "Everybody showed up. There were three NATM members sitting here killing each other, plus you had Crazy Eddie, The Wiz and others." This was, however, before the national CE chains were part of the picture. Even so, it was a tough time for CE and
appliance retailing, but Bernie's reputation kept the company afloat.
When Rosenberg re-opened Bernie's in October of 1991 he ran a big promotion to let the public know that the old Bernie's was back. "Even after having [Newmark and Lewis] ruin the reputation of the company they'd bought, it bounced back right away. It was awesome," says Rosenberg.
