Retailing in HD
Ovation's involvement with each varies on their readiness to broadcast HD, but Mincy says he makes a point to meet with every broadcaster in each market at least once and keeps in touch with some on a monthly, sometimes weekly rotation.
"I got to know and got on a first name basis with all of the chief engineers in all of the markets and approached it from that perspective so that I could start to understand what they were doing to transition and when they were going to make it," said Mincy. "By the time I went to the sales staff at the TV station and to the people that get support from the manufacturers to do this, I already knew (what station) was going to come up first."
By June of 1998 Ovation sat down with WTHR-TV, an Indianapolis NBC station, and Panasonic to discuss the possibility of a high definition broadcast in the Fall of 1998, most likely a sporting event. In the end the Purdue versus Notre Dame football game was the first HD broadcast in September of 1998 in South Bend, Ind.
