Cover Story: Scoring Sales
Around this writer's town, everyone bleeds green. Eagles Green. And while every city shows its devotion differently, one thing's for sure: Americans are wild for their teams.
Football, particularly, draws tremendous audiences. The National Retail Federation (NRF) calls football "the most watched professional sport in America." Think packed bars and hordes of fans funneling into stadiums each week. The "fan-demonium" begins every August and, for two fortunate teams, culminates on one particular Sunday in early February each year. This, of course, is Super Bowl Sunday.
"It's the only big event of the year when you invite people over to enjoy an evening," noted Alan Lavine, vice president at Percy's TV, Appliance, Furniture & Bedding in Worcester, Mass. "Even if your team is not in it, you will watch [a portion of the game]."
