Holidays Looking Dark- NPD
Sales of consumer electronics this holiday season are looking "increasingly dark," NPD Group's Stephen Baker said Tuesday.
In a blog post, Baker attributed the dark forecast to four developments: flat pricing levels, a "lack of killer hardware innovation" that won't inspire consumers to replace TVs and other non-obsolete products; the "nothing grows forever" factor and trends that show some consumers are choosing to not buy anything.
"While technology may remain a necessity, the next cycle of hardware, software, and services is likely to spur consumers to upgrade into significantly better and more capable devices, be they tablet computers, 3D TVs, or something else," Baker wrote. "While there is not likely to be a savior for this holiday, longer-term the technology industry’s ability to reinvent itself will create the needs and wants that will bring consumers back again.
