Same-store sales nationwide rose slightly in February from January, Retail Forward said Thursday, based on the reports of 35 retailers who have reported sales. The positive figure of 0.4 percent compares with the 1.4 percent drop reported in January.
Leading the pack was Walmart, which posted a 5.1 percent same-stores gain, while Target saw sales drop 4.1 percent.
“Shoppers are giving some encouraging signs even as they remain focused on limiting their spending. In some cases, the belt-tightening several months ago amid broad uncertainty has proved too severe as time or need has unfolded,” Frank Badillo, the senior economist for Retail Forward, said as part of the announcement.
