Will the 2006 holiday season be a Blu-ray Christmas? With Samsung Blu-ray players on the market about a month already moving at what company spokesmen say is a brisk pace, it’s a good bet that Blu-ray is one area that will cause a good deal of hullabaloo on fourth-quarter sales floors across America.
But the format’s actual sales impact at Christmastime, when it will still be an early-adopter favorite dependent on the presence of other brands, the growth of title availability and the synergistic benefits of Sony’s imminent PS3 release, is difficult to predict at this point. However, Samsung’s Aaron Novak, marketing manager for camcorders and digital video systems, says that Blu-ray players could experience overall sell-through numbers in the “tens of thousands” through the balance of the year.
Meanwhile, Samsung, for its part, will also be promoting some tried-and-true categories, come Christmas, he says -- including a unique feature twist in its Sports Camcorders line that was dictated by the products’ on-line user community.
