Samsung Sued Over Blu-ray Player
Samsung this week found itself the subject of a class action suit from a group of customers who claim that they bought defective Blu-ray Disc players from the company.
According to the Epicenter blog on Wired.com, the suit’s lead plaintiff claims that numerous Blu-ray movies were unwatchable on the player he purchased, the Samsung BD-01200. The suit was filed after Samsung said it would not provide firmware updates to correct the problem. A possible reason for the discs’ failure to play may have been the BD+ DRM technology used on early Blu-ray players.
The suit was filed in U.S. District Court in Newark, N.J., and Robert T. McGovern of Colchester, Conn., is listed as lead plaintiff, while Samsung Electronics America is the defendant. McGovern alleges that Samsung was “fully aware of the defective nature” of the players it sold, which constituted a “proximate cause of injury” to the plaintiff.
