Samsung Unleashes New SmartThings Products for Connected Home Beginners
Samsung released a trio of entry-level, connected home products today consisting of the new SmartThings Cam ($89.99), SmartThings WiFi Smart Plug ($17.99), and SmartThings Smart Bulb ($9.99). Coming in well under Amazon’s Cloud Cam and Nest Cam’s price point, the SmartThings lineup was created to provide homeowners with premium home security that wouldn’t break the bank. Even the Cam and Smart Plug won’t require you to purchase Samsung’s SmartThings Hub—which currently retails for $70—making it ideal smart home newbies.
“We want to help families keep their connected lives simple and seamless using SmartThings to bring together hundreds of popular smart home products in one platform,” said SK Kim, Senior Director, IoT Product Marketing at Samsung Electronics America. “Our new SmartThings Cam, Wifi Smart Plug and Smart Bulb create new pathways into our smart home platform, where users will discover how everyday tasks can easily be automated.”
The SmartThings Cam offers day and night protection using a Full HD (1080p) 145-degree, wide-angle camera. Users can set activity zones that can be monitored from anywhere using the SmartThings app. The Cam’s advanced object detection is able to differentiate between people, pets, and cars to provide homeowners with the most relevant updates. When an alert calls for a users attention, they can easily communicate with the other end by using the two-way audio directly from their smartphone.
Just like the SmartThings Cam, the WiFi Smart Plug does not require the hub to turn lamps, small appliances, and other electronic devices into smart home companions. Through the SmartThings app, users can create personal automations for their homes like scheduling their SmartThings Smart Bulb lights to dim during movie nights or turn on as they arrive home.
All three devices work with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung’s Bixby voice assistants. Cam owners can enjoy 24 hours of cloud storage at no additional cost with the option to add up to 4 SmartThings Cams. All three products are available starting today at Samsung.com and select retailers nationwide.
