Samsung’s Mobile Division Had Strong First Quarter
Despite soft sales throughout the sector, Samsung Electronics’ cell phone brand had a surprisingly strong first quarter, analysts iSuppli Corp. said Monday, in their report of a particularly weak first quarter all around the industry.
In a quarter in which phone shipments fell nearly 13 percent from the previous quarter, Samsung reversed the industry trend, shipping 34.8 million units for a 9.1 percent increase. All four of the other top five brands (Nokia, Motorola, LG and Sony Ericsson) saw decreases in the quarter, iSuppli said.
Tina Teng, a wireless communications analyst with iSuppli, attributed the strength mostly to sales growth in the Asian market, as well as to their emphasis on “low-end, inexpensive mobile phones.”
