Satellite's Big Step for Consumers, Industry
Consumer Electronics Association President and CEO Gary Shapiro issued the following statement today applauding the U.S. Senate for reauthorizing the Satellite Home Viewer Act (SHVIA):
"The Senate took a bold step toward helping millions of Americans join the digital television revolution by reauthorizing SHVIA. The so-called 'white areas' provision of the bill will allow satellite broadcasters to transmit DTV and high-definition (HDTV) network programming to television viewers who currently cannot receive these broadcasts from their local ABC, NBC, CBS or FOX affiliate. Just as these viewers can receive network broadcasts in standard definition via satellite, they now will be able to view them in the full glory of HDTV.
"Passage of this bill will help accelerate our nation's transition to digital television. Sales of digital television products already are up by more than 71% this year over 2003. By making broadcasts available to millions of consumers - particularly those in rural and other undeserved areas - Congress can help ensure that our nation speeds toward the completion of the transition, with the goal of freeing up valuable spectrum to the benefit of American taxpayers and innovators.
