Sean Young, President and Owner, Sound Decision
Career History: Young began his odyssey in the mobile electronics installation world at 15, when he went to work as an installer for Best Buy. After a six-year stint in the Army Reserves and a few unsatisfying jobs with mobile retailers, Young and a buddy started Sound Decision in Montgomery, Ill., in 2000. After working their tails off, generating a ton a press, collecting installation awards and hitting respectable sales numbers, Young realized about 18 months ago the company wasn’t making any money. So he bit the bullet and hired a retail consultant, who taught him about cash flow, managing employees, spiffs, and how to buy product. “If I did this seven years ago, we’d all be driving Ferraris by now,” Young said. “But we’ll get there.” Young has since hung up his tools and is now managing the front office full time.
Greatest Business Achievements: Young increased sales 40 percent and his employees, whose pay is now based on incentives, make more money than they did in past years.
