Overall shipments of TV sets in North America dropped 7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2008, while LCD TV shipments dropped year over year for the first time ever. That's according to numbers released this week by research firm DisplaySearch, which was in line with earlier forecasts.
The drop in performance was attributed by the firm largely to retailers ordering less inventory in anticipation of less demand over the holidays.
In terms of market share, Samsung kept its overall flat-panel lead for the sixth quarter in a row, with 20.4 percent of the market in the fourth quarter. Sony was second, followed by Vizio and LG. Samsung also led in LCD market share (followed by Sony and Vizio), while Panasonic led once again in plasma share, followed by Samsung and Vizio.
