Plasma Shipments Drop Again
Shipments of plasma display panels, between manufacturers and brands, dropped from the same time last year for the second straight quarter, as weak global demand continued to affect the market. That's according to numbers released this week by DisplaySearch.
According to the survey, Quarterly Global TV Shipment and Forecast Report, Plasma and LCD TV Panel Shipment Module, the shipments dropped 28 percent over the previous quarter and 22 percent from the same quarter last year. The drop was also attributed to both declines in production at the 32" size, and the exit from the plasma market of such companies as Pioneer and Vizio.
“As bad as plasma unit shipments were in Q1’09 relative to a year ago, plasma panel revenues were even worse, declining 36% Y/Y as falling prices were needed to stem even steeper demand falloff,” the firm's Director of North America TV Market Research, Paul Gagnon, said as part of the announcement.
