Shutl Readies Same-Day Delivery Service in U.S.
Launched in the U.K. three years ago, Shutle today covers about 84 percent of the country and serves 20 retail partners, including Argos, the U.K.'s largest multichannel retailer, said Allason, who sees a greater opportunity in the U.S. due to the higher rate of urbanization here. "The UK only has 13 metros with a population of over 750,000; North America has 67," he said, adding that two thirds of Shutl's U.K. customers choose the "as soon as possible" delivery option and more than 60 percent place orders after Amazon's midday cutoff. "We also see less than 10 percent of our customers opting for evening delivery, which is interesting because that's the only time Amazon's same-day service is offered."
Many of Shutl's retail partners in the U.K subsidize delivery or offer it for free to customers who spend more than a certain amount. "The only reason why you wouldn't get something delivered when you wanted it is price," Allason said. "So we see our mission as ensuring that we can get our cost as close to the cost of standard delivery as possible so the consumer says, 'Why wouldn't I'?"
Will Shutl Succeed?
