Snapchat Reveals Spectacles 3 with Dual HD Cameras and 3D Effects
Snapchat has released the latest rendition of their Spectacle smart glasses. The Spectacles 3 will cost twice as much as last year’s model, but this time, the whimsical sunglasses will include dual HD cameras to “capture the world in 3D.”
Positioned on the outermost corners of the glasses, the HD cameras allow users to create depth by simply moving their head from side-to-side. Snapchat says the Spectacles 3 were meant to capture a life-like rendition of the world, but with a little flare, obviously. In keeping to their brand, Snapchat allows for various effects including 3D filters for AR graphic effects, 3D lenses for stickers and text, new lighting, and different landscapes. Snapchat also didn’t forget about audio, and added a four-microphone array to boost the sound quality.
The Spectacles 3 are available in two color options: “carbon” (black) and “mineral” (gold-tinted). Each pair also comes with a leather charging case for easy storage and to power up the glasses, which takes about 75 minutes. Snapchat says a single charge is powerful enough to withstand 70 videos and over 200 photos. With 4GB of storage, the Spectacles can house up to 100 videos or 1,200 photos in total. Users will still have to download their content onto their phone however, as the glasses won’t automatically transfer content to a Snapchat account. To look back on old snapshots, users can access the 3D Viewer to enjoy their own photos and videos or to see another person’s perspective.
Unlike previous generations, the Spectacles 3 will only be available in a limited quantity being that the company is hoping to attract a smaller, “fashion-forward” audience. Although, it’s also feasible that Snapchat might be making less product to avoid another financial loss from these smart glasses.
The Spectacles 3 are available for pre-order now at a retail price of $380. According to the order form, the glasses are expect to ship in November.
