Song Tagging: A “Killer App” For Radio?
How can radio compete with satellite, iPods, in-car audio, and other new innovations? One executive sees a “killer app” that will let radio not only survive but thrive.
It’s digital song tagging which, according to the head of Ennis Communications, will not only let users know the song that’s playing, but will allow users to plan out their future downloads. Jeff Smulyan made the comments in a speech earlier this week to several top radio groups, MediaDailyNews reported.
Smulyan also put forward the ambitious goal of, in five years, making an FM radio tuner available on every mobile phone and PDA sold in the U.S. He cited the popular of iPod accessories that include tuners, and said that “the industry is pulling together” to make such changes possible.
