Sonic Launches Copyright Protection for Download-to-DVD Services
Roxio makers Sonic Solutions have announced the arrival of Qflix, which enables download-to-DVD services to encrypt their content, according to InformationWeek. Using a protection system developed by the DVD Copy Control Association, the software may present a solution that movie studios, reluctant to enter into the download-to-DVD market for a lack of encryption, have been waiting for. The application may also benefit in-store kiosks which would allow customers to create DVDs of films on the fly.
Special DVD recorders and disks are required to implement the technology, so Sonic anticipates a lag time of three to five years before it becomes pervasive.
Sonic is working with at least 20 different companies to bring the technology to market.
