Wireless multi-room music system maker Sonos has introduced a compact, all-in-one speaker – the PLAY:3 – that at $299 provides consumers a new entry-level starting point from which they can build a Sonos hi-fi system.
The speaker, controllable with free apps that work on iPads, iPhones and Android devices, measures 5.2 inches by 10.5 inches by 6.3 inches. It is comprised of two four-inch midrange drivers and a tweeter with a passive bass radiator positioned at the rear. Each driver has its own, dedicated amplifier, and the speaker may be used either horizontally or vertically.
“It’s a ‘smart’ speaker, in that it dynamically adjusts its equalization to mono when placed on its end,” said Jon Reilly, technical product manager, in a New York City-held demo of the new speaker. He added that should a consumer wish to use two speakers, a simple software setting, when enabled, will make the speakers into a matched stereo pair.
