Sonos will begin shipping in early November the ZonePlayer S5 – an all-in-one music system controllable with an iPhone that wirelessly plays music from various local or Internet sources.
The new component, priced at $399, has five built-in drivers (two tweeters, two midranges and a subwoofer), each having its own dedicated digital amplification. It works in conjunction with a Sonos ZoneBridge attached to a router.
“The concept behind the S5, basically, is smartphone meets smart speaker,” said Sonos co-founder Tom Cullen during a New York-held product demonstration in late October. He added that the product would most benefit iPhone users looking for a sound solution. “Docks are not the answer for iPhone users, because every time the phone rings, it has to be removed from the dock to answer it,” he said.
