Sonos Launches Subscription Service in the Netherlands
In a move that flew somewhat under the radar—in the U.S. at least—Sonos launched a subscription service for several of its connected speakers. Currently, the Sonos Flex subscription service is reserved for 500 Netherland residents at a time, but could soon be expanding globally if all goes well.
To get started, users must choose a black or white speaker setup and one of three subscription options:
- For Every Room: For €15 a month, you get two Sonos One smart speakers to use together or in separate rooms.
- For Your TV: The €25 per month subscription comes with a Sonos Beam soundbar and two Sonos One speakers for TV audio.
- For Home Theater: As the most expensive subscription option at €50 a month, you’ll get a Playbar, Subwoofer, and two Sonos One smart speakers to create “the ultimate home cinema.”
Sonos is offering free delivery and installation for the home theater subscription on an as-needed basis. The speakers will stay up-to-date with the latest models and software as they are released. And best of all, Sonos Flex plans can be cancelled at any time. No questions asked.
At first glance, these subscription services seem a little silly, and not something that would make sense for the long term. After all, the value of the first option can be reached after just two years. But the key here is that the subscriptions can be cancelled at any time. So really, it could be a good way for someone to test out a Sonos speaker before deciding to buy one, or it could be useful for a special occasion that requires high-class audio.
When asked if they were looking into a rent-to-own option for their speakers, a Sonos spokesperson told The Verge, “We’re listening to customers throughout the program, and if that is an area of feedback, we’ll certainly look at it.”
