Sony Cutting PS3 Price, After All
Despite months of denials, including a statement last week from its president that no such move was in the offing, Sony’s gaming division will cut the price of the Playstation 3 console by $100, to $499, Business Week reported.
With the PS3 falling way behind Nintendo’s Wii console, a change was eventually expected. But last week, after rumors of an impending cut were reported on several gaming Web sites, Sony president Ryoji Chubachi told Bloomberg News on Friday that there were no immediate plans for such a cut. These followed comments in June by Howard Stringer, Sony’s CEO, that the company would likely “refine” the price in time for the holiday season.
Sony also announced Monday that a new 80GB model of the PS3 will be released in August, at a suggested retail price of $599.
