Sony Forms LCD Alliances With Samsung, Sharp
Following reports Tuesday that it had agreed with Sharp to jointly produce LCD-TV panels at a plant in Japan, Sony is reportedly close to agreeing to a similar deal with Samsung, Reuters is reporting.
The Samsung-Sony talks, which the report says are in “final stages,” would result in a new production line, as well as a plant in South Korea. The Sony-Sharp deal, meanwhile, calls for a jointly owned plant, in which Sharp will hold a 66 percent interest, with the plant scheduled to open in 2010.
Sony does not have any facilities to make LCD panels themselves, so they have historically formed partnerships with other manufacturers.
