Sony Drops $500 PS3, Hires New VP
Sony will no longer produce the $499 20GB version of the Playstation 3 gaming console in North America, leaving only the $599, 60GB version on the market, the company announced Thursday.
In an official statement that was e-mailed to several news outlets, including Variety and the San Francisco Chronicle, Sony Computer Entertainment America communications director Dave Karraker said the decision was based on “overwhelming demand” from both retailers and consumers for the 60GB edition. The PS3 was released in two separate editions last October.
Sony will still provide support for the 20GB console, and it will continue to be sold until supplies are exhausted.
