Sony Puts $200 Million Into OLED Development
In an investment in the future of advanced flat-panel screen technologies, Sony this week committed $200 million to develop organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels. Reuters reported that the new TVs, which Sony first unveiled last fall, will help make it easier for the company to make the products.
OLED TVs are thinner than LCD or plasma models, and also use less energy. The current version is only 11 inches, but bigger ones are on the way.
Sony’s first OLED TVs were to arrive in Japan last December; no U.S. release of the panels has yet been announced.
