Sony Says It Will Ship 11 Million PS3s in ‘07
Sony Corp. is upping the ante in its competition with Microsoft and Nintendo for the gaming console market. The company said this week that it plans to ship 11 million units of the Playstation 3 worldwide this year, AFP reported.
The announcement comes as Sony has fallen behind Nintendo’s Wii in the console wars. In April, according to NPD Group data, the gap separating the Wii from its two competitors grew even larger. Nintendo moved 360,000 Wii consoles, compared with about 174,000 of the Xbox 360, while the Playstation 3 brought up the rear with about 82,000 sold. (The NPD figures were reported by the New York Times.)
In addition, the “architect” of the Playstation system, software engineer Ken Kutaragi, announced earlier this year that he was leaving the company. Sony also said last week that it had suffered its worst quarterly loss since 2003, which it attributed largely to investments in its gaming division.
