Sony Sued Over Blu-ray Patent
A little-known software company has thrown an unexpected wrench into the high-def DVD format war- they’re suing Sony for infringing its patents for the underlying technology behind Blu-ray Disc. Target Technology has filed suit in U.S. District Court in Indiana, alleging that Sony infringed on its patented method of reflecting light with metallic layers, the blog DailyTech.com reported. Target Technology is seeking unspecified damages, as well as an injunction against Sony.
The suit was filed against the gaming, DADC, and motion picture divisions of Sony, all of which use the Blu-ray technology. Target Technology has held the patent since March of 2006, after applying for it two years earlier.
Target Technology is based in Japan and Taiwan, with its U.S. headquarters in Irvine, Calif. It is not in any way affiliated with the Target retail chain.
