PS3 Passes Xbox in Installed Base
Sony's PlayStation 3 passed Microsoft's Xbox 360 to become the #2 console worldwide in terms of installed base at the end of 2010, research Strategy Analytics said Thursday.
The PlayStation 3 reached 43.4 million installed units, passing the Xbox 360 with 42.9 million. Both are behind Nintendo's Wii, with 75.5 million, although the firm predicted that the Wii will eventually fall behind its two competitors in terms of yearly sales.
“While the Kinect peripheral has given a boost to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 strategy, the console’s performance outside of the US continues to disappoint,” Jia Wu, Senior Analyst in Strategy Analytics’ Digital Consumer Practice, said as part of the announcement. “Global demand for Sony’s PS3 has exceeded that of the Xbox 360 in each of the past two years, and we expect that to continue over the coming years.”
