If he could have done anything differently at Ken Crane's, it would have been to move more aggressively into custom services. "Hindsight is 20/20, but I wish we had moved sooner with the custom installation department," he said.
Ken Crane's began to build its custom installation expertise after the company bought Leigh Adams Discount Sales in 2007. "It wasn't until into mid-'08 when we were really staffed up to offer custom services on a wide basis through all the stores, and that's when things started slowing down," Caldero said.
Ken Crane's also wrestled with its Web presence, and currently lacks the online sales that have helped other retailers weather the economic storm. "We had false starts in '06 and '07," he said. A company hired to develop Ken Crane's informational Web site and then its transactional Web Site went out of business and left the company hanging.
