Studies: Facebook Apps are Still Killing Your Phone’s Battery
It’s no big secret that Facebook and all of its merry apps that live on your smartphone put a massive strain on your device’s battery. The company admitted to as much last year in—go figure—a Facebook post by engineering manager Ari Grant:
The first issue we found was a “CPU spin” in our network code. A CPU spin is like a child in a car asking, “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?” with the question not resulting in any progress to reaching the destination. This repeated processing causes our app to use more battery than intended. The version released today has some improvements that should start making this better.
The social network has released a number of updates to its apps in the weeks since that post, but the issues persist.
