“Households on the Move,” a new study by Parks Associates, reports that of the 23 million households that move every 18 months, 20 percent have purchased a traditional tube television set, 16 percent a flat-panel LCD, 7 percent have purchased a tube HDTV and 8 percent a flat-panel plasma. This is compared to non-moving households who have purchased in fewer numbers in each category.
The study suggests that the appeal of new TVs for new households stems from the inconvenience of or potential damage from moving old televisions or the need to provide entertainment for a greater number of rooms than before. Says John Barret, director of research at Parks Associates, “Consumer electronics companies should target households on the move through discounts and promotions.”
