What They’re Thinking: Jack Wayman
When we’d testify before Congress, Jack Valenti would bring out Clint Eastwood and other stars, and all the congressional staffers would hang from the rafters. On our side, it was just me. I’d tell them, ‘Hollywood is a world of greed, helicopters and fast women. Pure greed, sir. We’re just small manufacturers trying to satisfy the public, trying to help with their lifestyle and their dreary life.’
We won 5-4 in the Supreme Court in 1984. That was a monumental case. The only major case Valenti and the MPAA ever lost.
That case is still monumental because everybody’s referring to the Sony Betamax case. The music industry is still trying to overthrow it and revoke the essence of that Supreme Court decision. If we didn’t have that case, the music industry would run roughshod over our products and stifle them.
