Then RCA says, “We got the job for you!” with a parts-dominated trade association that started out as the Radio Manufacturers Association in 1924. The Home Electronics Section of the Electronics Industry Association only had 12 members, and they did 90 percent of the business. I said, “I’ll do it.” I became staff director of HES in mid-1963 with no staff, just a desk and a telephone in a basement room.
I became a full trade association geisha. You gotta dance and perform for them, and please everybody. It ain’t easy. People (on the HES board) were arch rivals, strong corporate entrepreneurs. To put them in a room and try to get consensus? You need those diplomatic skills, I guess.
Within a year, we changed the name to Consumer Products Division (EIA) and increased membership to 25.
