The Appliance Cycle
However, Brown also notes that it is difficult to predict when an appliance might fail—some work perfectly for extended periods, while others have problems right away.
"I have repaired dozens of 25-year old dryers that never needed anything more than minor repairs," he says. "I've also seen 10-year old dryers that were so far gone and would have needed such extensive repairs that I recommended the customer buy a new one. I've also seen four-year old dryers that were ready for the trash heap the day they were built. It depends on how efficient the machine's design is, the way the parts work together and the way the owner has been handling the machine. It all adds up."
According to Dan Guckin of AJ Appliances in Baltimore, MD, while there are no absolute overall rules for appliance repairs, there are quite a few notable, commonly observed repair problems for every recognized category of major appliances.
