No official data or sales figures have been released by either company—at least as far as I could tell from a few moments of digging through corporate websites and social media feeds. But by all accounts, the launch of the SYMFONISK line of speaker furniture, born out of the partnership between IKEA and Sonos, was a roaring success over the weekend.
The line, which includes a bookshelf and desktop lamp with integrated Sonos audio gear, showed up at IKEA retail locations in Sweden in the past few days (the retailer’s homeland), and videos from inside the story would have you believe it was like Black Friday. Review of one video shared by Peter Brundenius, a project manager for IKEA Home Smart, shows a sea of customers all grabbing at boxes of SYMFONISK speakers, walking around with shopping carts full, and at least one guy taking off with a stack of four bookshelf speakers in tote.
Despite the lack of hard data, what’s clear from the customer response in these in-store videos is that IKEA and Sonos have created the perfect partnership and perfect lineup of product. Both brands are known for their accessibility and general affordability among consumers, so it only made sense for them to come together and combine their expertise to create a unique product line like SYMFONISK.
“We knew from the start that we wanted to challenge the traditional high-tech aesthetics. The lamp-speaker partly springs from the idea of the fireplace – one single piece that spreads warm light as well as sound,” Iina Vuorivirta, one of the designers of SYMFONISK lamp-speaker at IKEA of Sweden, said in a statement at the time of their unveiling. “Our design had to be 100 percent true to the quality Sonos stands for, without any compromises. At the same time, we wanted to create something completely new.”
And best of all? No assembly required. 😉
