Attitudes: CE Needs Women
After visiting the CEDIA Expo recently, as well as several dealer visits and other industry events, it’s extremely evident that CE is still a heavily male-dominated industry. That’s amazing to me, considering how many woman use and appreciate our products and how important women are in the purchase decisions.
According to the US Department of Labor, in 2007, around the same number of men and women (8.2 million) were employed in sales-related positions. You’d never know that by walking into most electronics stores—whether big box or custom-focused.
Manufacturers know that women are important to their markets. You only have to look at their commercials and ads that feature women, families and design integration to see that. TV makers are racing to come up with industrial designs that appeal to families. Speaker companies have made great progress with speakers that blend into home decors rather than stand out like tree trunks in living rooms. The video game industry knows that women are a growing part of its demographic, and cell phone companies tout both fashion and function as appealing to the female customer.
