Standards Group Sides With Apple in Pre/iTunes Case
The latest round in the ongoing battle between Apple and Palm over whether the latter company can sync the iTunes software with its Palm Pre device went to Apple.
According to the AP, the industry standards group known as The USB Implementers Forum wrote a letter to both companies this week that Apple's actions in blocking the maneuver do not violate group rules- but that Palm may be doing so if they use the code to allow syncing again.
The Pre, when it debuted in June, allowed syncing with iTunes, the first non-Apple device to do so, although Apple later disabled the the functionality through software updates. Palm responded by developing a workaround involving a hardware vendor code furnished by the USB group. And that was the group's objection in this week's ruling.
