The New, the Strange, the Megapix
Toshiba took what it learned from the successful PDR-M5 camera in its design of the PDR-M60, essentially an M5 without the frills. The M60 replaces the rechargeable battery with four AAs and puts the flash in a fixed position on the camera body. It will ship in May for under $600, possible much lower.
Finally, we come to the big boys, the 3 megapixel-and-up cameras. Last year the 2 to 2.3 Mp wonders wowed PMA attendees. This year's floor walkers seemed already bored with the "more pixels is better" argument. Still, here's a brief rundown of the newest
Nikon demonstrated the 3.34 megapixel Coolpix 990 (right). It features a 3X zoom Nikkor lens, 256 element matrix metering, 40 seconds of MJPEG, and it creates still image files up to 10 MBs (April, $999).
