Plasma Revenues Decline, NPD Group Says
An across-the-board drop in prices has led to the first-ever year-over-year decrease in revenues for the plasma TV category, analysts the NPD Group said in a report released Tuesday. The survey showed that despite a 30 percent increase in sales, a 35 percent price drop led to an overall decline for February, the most recent month for which statistics are available.
The category posted $181 million in revenue in February of 2007, compared with just under $216 million for the same month in 2006.
“While these lower prices have allowed plasma manufacturers to reach out to a broader consumer base with a differentiated display technology, it’s still not enough to keep revenue on the rise,” Ross Rubin, NPD’s director of industry analysis, said in a statement released with the study.
