The Total Package
Though Cablevision had several stores where customers could pay bills and upgrade services prior to the WIZ acquisition, those locations could not offer the high profile and built-in customer base of a long-standing chain like The WIZ, and many have been replaced.
Nobody Beats Cablevision
In addition to selling cable programming packages, the Cablevision outlets within The WIZ stores began selling consumer electronics with the introduction of its high-speed cable modem and Internet service, branded Optimum Online (OOL). The self-installable cable modem was introduced to the WIZ in October 1999, and for the third quarter ended September 2001, 26 percent of the 55,000 total OOL purchases during the traditionally slow summer occurred at The WIZ. Regular pricing for OOL is $129.95 for the modem with a one-year contract, and $29.95 a month if the customer already has cable TV, or $39.95 if the customer does not.
