The Tough Get Tougher
DEALERSCOPE: What are the major appliance trends heading into 2008? What were sales trends in ‘07?
n Baillio: Color, color, color! Most of the major manufacturers have now looked at it. They looked at what LG had done, taking share with their color front-load washers, and they were the new kid on the block in appliances, just four years in the market. Everyone else asked what they’d done wrong. They’d waited on colors too long. But I don’t think anyone could have predicted the success of colors four years ago. That’s what made them sell, not necessarily the new steam technology. Women are the deciders for these appliances - it’s got to be aesthetically appealing, and jump out at you. Manufacturers at first covered their ears and eyes and thought maybe it would go away, but it got bigger and bigger as a trend, and now they’re scrambling to respond.
n Lavine: New built-in products—cooktops, new steam washing machines, new technology in wall ovens, shallow-depth refrigerators and new colors —washers in red, green, orange or blue. But there’s nothing out there really to counter the decreases in the housing market.
