Coming to a Panel Near You: Government Pushes Solar Technology
Solar power may soon to be coming to consumer technologies from cell phones to computers, now that the government has agreed to fund the research efforts of 15 companies- to the tune of $168 million.
The grants were announced by Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman last Thursday at the headquarters of Konarka Technologies, a Lowell, Mass.-based solar energy firm that was spun off from the University of Massachusetts. Konarka specializes in plastic solar cell strips, which may eventually be used to power electronic appliances.
Each of the companies involved has agreed to watch the government contribution, bringing the total investment up to nearly $357 million over three years.
