ZigBee to Set Battery-Free Green Standard
The ZigBee Alliance is developing a ZigBee Green Power standard for wireless technology products that uses environmental energy-harvesting methods, instead of batteries, for power. Energy-harvesting involves converting environmental sources, such as light, vibration and ambient radio waves into electricity, though ZigBee's announcement did not specify which, if any, of these techniques would be employed.
The standard will be available to Alliance members by the end of the year to facilitate the manufacture of products which offer energy-harvesting technology to the consumer. The resulting ZigBee Green Power standard products would function with pre-existing ZigBee networks and erase the necessity of wires and batteries.
ZigBee Alliance Bob Heile stated, "ZigBee Green Power provides the world with a true standard for control and sensing products that can utilize harvested energy."
