Thomson's SmartRight Aims to Prevent Video "Napsterization"
By Markkus Rovito
Thomson Multimedia is pitching another smart card-based copy protection technology, named SmartRight, that works with both A/V and computer networks and is designed to prevent the "Napsterization" of video.
Late last month, Thomson Multimedia introduced SmartRight at a meeting with the industry-insider committee the Copy Protection Working Group, contending that SmartRight can provide digital content copy protection on its own or act as additional layer of protection to existing systems. Thomson Multimedia declined to name other vendors supporting the technology, but said it was starting a SmartRight Association.
