Perhaps harkening back to the good ol’ days of movie rentals from a company like Blockbuster, GameStop announced a new in-store video game rental program. PowerPass, as it’s called, will let subscribers take home used video games and swap out at any time. The model charges $60 for a six-month pass, and the only true hangup here (if you want to call it that) is that you can only have one game checked out at a time.
According to a report on Mashable, the program will launch this holiday season and will only be available in the six-month plan option. There’s a reason for that, though—apparently, at the end of the six months, you’ll be able to pick one game to keep for “free.”
Another catch to this PowerPass program is that it’s not available to any consumer. Rather, you have to be a GameStop Power-Up Rewards member. There is a freemium model for the Power-Up program that only requires you to create an account on the GameStop website. But there are paid-for models that run at $14.99 or $29.99.
