TIDAL, MQA Bring Master Quality Tracks to iPhones
Following up on the launch of Master quality tracks on Android phones earlier this year, streaming music service TIDAL and MQA announced that the higher-quality tracks are now available via iPhones. The optimized TIDAL Masters tracks will be made available through an update to TIDAL’s iOS app.
To achieve the improved mobile listening experience, TIDAL employed MQA’s process known as “music origami” to fold master-track quality files—which can be massive—into smaller files that are able to be streamed on the go. The in-app MQA decoder is able to recover all of the direct music-related information within the track, authenticate it to the source of the original master recording, and improve the overall quality of the track for the listener.
“From our ongoing work with engineers and artists, we know the importance creators place on delivering the original sound they created all the way to the music fan,” MQA CEO Mike Jbara said in a statement. “Through our global partnership with TIDAL, this becomes a reality wherever you’re enjoying your music.”
TIDAL COO Lior Tibon added that giving listeners the ability to listen to tracks in the was the recording artist intended is “a core value of the TIDAL platform.”
MQA has partnerships will all three major record labels, as well as with Merlin, which represents the independent label community.
