The War is Over: Toshiba Gives Up on HD DVD
Bringing to a close a nearly two-year format war that divided the motion picture industry in two and led to just as much rancor among partisan fans, Toshiba made the decision over the weekend to stop production of HD DVD players, effectively ceding victory in the format war to the Sony-backed Blu-ray Disc format.
According to Reuters, which cited a report from the Japanese broadcast outlet NHK, the move will cause Toshiba to suffer a loss in the hundreds of millions of dollars. The company will continue to sell existing inventory, but will no longer produce new players.
A Toshiba source confirmed NHK’s report to Reuters on Monday. An official announcement is expected this week.
