Toshiba Said to Be Ready to Pull HD DVD Plug
Toshiba will finally throw in the towel on HD DVD in the coming weeks, multiple media outlets, including the Hollywood Reporter, reported early Thursday.
While a spokeswoman for Toshiba, the format’s primary backer, told the Reporter that no decision has been made, she did say that the company will “continue to study the market impact” of a continued fight.
The format war began to seriously break in favor of Sony’s Blu-ray Disc format in January, when Warner Home Video announced it would go Blu-ray-exclusive. Since then, both Best Buy and Netflix have announced their support for Blu-ray, while Toshiba has fought back with deep price cuts on its HD DVD players. And a 30-second commercial for HD DVD that aired during the Super Bowl failed to sway many watchers, especially when it was revealed that it hadn’t actually aired in every market.
